Wintergreen Resort
Right in our own backyard

Virginia's Wintergreen Resort is ideal for daily, weekend, weekly, or monthly getaways!

Wintergreen, to much of eastern North America, is a small ground cover plant with green leaves, vivid crimson berries and white flowers.

To many of us in Virginia and adjacent states, it is a four season mountain resort offering recreational facilities for all ages.

Located about a one hour drive north of Lynchburg, the Wintergreen Resort was started in 1968 with valley and mountain-top amenities.

From Lynchburg, Wintergreen is an easy drive north on route 29, exiting left on Route 151 north. Follow Rt. 151 for 21 miles then exiting left onto Rt. 664 (Beach Grove Road). Finally bear right onto Wintergreen Drive and follow the winding road to the Devils Knob golf Course where you can pick up an area map.

If you miss the turn off on Rt. 664, you could proceed on to Old Stoney Creek Road (State Rt. 751)...turn left onto Old Stoney Creek Road and follow it until it becomes Laurel Springs Drive then left on Fawn Ridge Drive and a fairly quick left on Blue Ridge Drive which will take you to the Wintergreen Resort. Simple? Not if you're a first timer; get a map.

Who could ask for more?

I visited the site in 1969 and had doubts about its long term viability.

Wintergreen Resort Views

Needless to say, I underestimated the enormous success of this 11,000 acre resort situated along the eastern slopes of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.

The developed areas comprise about 2,000 acres with the remainder in pristine forest, hiking trails and breathtaking views.

For visitors wanting to enjoy all Wintergreen has to offer, you may want to consider the many spacious condominiums and rental options from multi-bedroom homes to smaller studio suites.

Wintergreen Mountain Inn

If not a rental, the Mountain Inn is always a good choice.

Wintergreen Resort Golf

There are two championship golf courses in the Wintergreen resort neighborhood. On the mountain top is the 18 hole Devils Knob course. This one is open in the spring, summer and fall.

It is an Ellis Maples designed course which, in addition to very challenging play, features a 16,585 square foot clubhouse fully equipped with a well outfitted pro shop, locker rooms and both snacking and dining facilities.

Devils Knob resides at 3,800 feet in the Blue Ridge Mountians, making it the highest golf course in Virginia. It is noted for its narrow fairways, breathtaking views (making it hard to keep your eye on the ball) and cool golf. That is "cool" as in temperature, being around 18 to 20 degrees cooler than its cousin Stoney Creek.

In the valley is the Stoney Creek Golf Course with 27 holes. Stoney Creek is open year-round and was tagged by Conde Nast Magazine as one of the top 50 golf resorts in the world.

Wintergreen Resort Golf

It is a Rees Jones design in which the three nines, dubbed the Monacan, Shamokin and Tuckahoe, wind around the gorgeous Rockfish Valley.

Play on the course is characterized by numerous elevation changes, an occasional hillside lie and countoured greens giving new meaning to the term "reading the green".

A first rate, high tech golf academy is also available for those wanting to improve their game. The academy features 10 structured learning experiences including:

  • Private lessons followed by nine holes at Stoney Creek
  • Learning the fundamentals in a one-hour clinic
  • One and two day golf schools
  • 12 hours of golf instruction over a 3-day period
  • An advanced 4-day junior school with an optonal 5th day
  • Alumni and Parent/child schools
  • A girl's golf getaway school
  • Click on more information for in-depth detail on all of the golf academy's offerings or call them at 434-325-8249.

    Wintergreen Resort Tennis

The tennis facilities and instruction are top notch for varied abilities and ages. Now that has to be the understatment of the year. Why? Because "Tennis Resorts Online" has ranked Wintergreen as one of the top ten tennis academies and top ten tennis resorts in the world.

In addition, Tennis Magazine has ranked Wintergreen among the top 50 tennis programs for the past 18 years. Their facilities are located at both Devils Knob and Stoney Creek and boast 19 clay courts and 3 indoor deco-turf courts.

The combination of indoor and outdoor courts allow for play all year round regardless of the weather.

Beautiful views of the courts and program information are available on their website and court reservations can be made by calling 434-325-8235.

    The Spa

The Wintergreen Resort Spa offers a spectacular mountain top view with personal body treatments and massages. Many of the ladies (and some of us guys) enjoy a little primping at the salon. Their services body wraps, facials, skincare treatments, nail care, and did we mention massages? Now that's what "primping" is all about.

    Wintergreen Resort Pool

Besides looking good, the spa will keep you fit with their cardiovascular and strength studio at the mountaintop Aquatics and Fitness Center.

Enjoy the heated indoor and outdoor pools, saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs. Don't you feel better already?

Photo:The aquatics and fitness center is always a popular spot for the water bugs and fitness devotees.

    What about the kids?

Childrens Programs are available all summer with a great spectrum of activities such as sailing, canoeing, hiking, backpacking, tubing and snorkeling, just to name a few.

Why, they even offer baby sitting services so Mom and Dad can get away for a bit.

    Wintergreen Skiing

The Wintergreen Ski Resort is the place to go for families who enjoy the outdoors during those cold winter months.

The favorite winter activity, as you might imagine, is skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing. Instruction is available for all.

Twenty trails are maintained with the latest computerized snowmaking equipment, so there is always enough of the white stuff to have a great winter experience.

    Wintergreen Resort Skiing

Our family spent many thrilling days, weekends, and weeks flying down these mountains and hiking the many trails. In fact, we all enjoyed it so much, we purchased a condo.

For skiers, walking out your door, donning the skis and hitting the slopes was the ultimate experience. We were quite spoiled.

    Wintergreen Resort Pavillion

And after a rugged day on the slopes, dining options are tempting your senses along the Pavillion.
