Waterstone Raises the Bar... in Casual, Fun Dining!
Waterstone Fire Roasted Pizza in Lynchburg seems to have an identity crisis; some people call it a restaurant, to others it's a grill and to pizza connoisseurs, it's that fire roasted pizza place.
No matter what you call it, Waterstone is just plain good. From the minute you enter the door to the time you pay the tab, you are made to feel welcome. Instead of just being a customer, you can expect to be treated as an old friend. Smiles and good feelings abound. Upon entering the door, typically, not one, but two attractive hostesses will meet and greet and show you to your table or booth. Photo: Heather and Kristin welcoming old and new friends
Next, your waiter or waitress will make you feel like it is actually their pleasure to be able to serve you. What a novel thing for a restaurant these days.
The ambiance absolutely exudes the history of old Lynchburg. It is easy to be transported back to late 1800's when Lynchburg was one of the wealthiest cities of its size in the entire country and many large industries and wealthy executives called this wonderful city "home". Sit and admire the old open brickwork and stones, marvel at the huge exposed ceiling beams, and note how it is all interwoven into an ultra-modern open kitchen and fire roasted pizza oven.
The buildings that comprise Waterstone, the Craddock Terry Hotel and Shoemakers American Grille were built between 1896 and 1906 with hand-made brick fired in Virginia. These establishments occupy space that once was the Craddock Terry Shoe Company and a complex of tobacco drying and storage facilities. As you relax and look around, what you are seeing is the result of a 5-year restoration project. Photo below: The distinctive fire-roasted pizza oven
The bar is spacious and well-stocked with large screen TVs overhead, usually with the sporting event of the moment playing. In this, it could remind one of a "sports bar" with class. Rest assured, it is all presented in the best of taste and not obtrusive in the least.
But What about the Food?Never fear, no one will ever get a bad meal at Waterstone. The menu is extremely varied, covering a wide variety of interesting appetizers, salads and sandwiches. The reason most people come here though is for the fire roasted pizza and pasta dishes. The extensive menu will please every taste. Like specialty brews? Try the Jefferson Street Lager, Ale or Amber. Need something with a little more backbone? Then take a look a their list of 20 or so specialty martinis. Unbelieveable! It is not possible to do the menu justice in a few paragraphs so here is a link to Waterstones menu as seen on their own website. Come see it for yourself and no need to dress up; it is casual.
