For Real Texas BBQ
Savor Pok-E-Joe's in Boonesboro

Not too long ago, Texas BBQ came to the Boonesboro Shopping Center in northwest Lynchburg. Pok-E-Joe's set up shop with its selection of great smoked meats and much needed food services.

While Pok-E-Joe's may be best known for its Texas BBQ it is much more. Bill Dawson, the owner and manager, offers catering services ranging from office luncheons to your backyard bash. Having a seminar? Save yourself a lot of work and let Pok-E-Joe's handle the lunch arrangements.

Pok-E-Joe's is in the information age as well with their website and Facebook page.

For those busy on-the-go people, they are researching an "order online" feature. If you would like to voice your opinion on that just go to www.pokejoesbbq.com, click on the "Online Ordering" and cast your vote "yes" or "no". In the meantime you can call in your order at the number below and have it waiting when you arrive.

The "Take Out" selections are sized to make sure no one goes hungry. They range from your choice of one pound of smoked meat, four sides and all the fixin's to feed 3-4 people; or two pounds of meat and sides to feed 5-6 people; or the big three pounds of meat and three-and-a-half pounds of side items for 7-10 people.

There's nothing like good beef brisket or chopped beef Texas BBQ; just ask anyone who has tried Pok-E-Joe's hickory smoked "Q". But guess what? Their Smoked Meat Market also includes hand sliced pork and turkey.

These wonderful meats can be served up as plates with two sides and hushpuppies or sandwiches and wraps. Their dogs and burgers are not to be outdone but a couple of all time favorites are the Texas Tacos and Quesadillas.

Be sure to top it off with the Homemade "Nana Puddin", cookies or brownies or whatever the Dessert of the Day happens to be.

While Pok-E-Joe's Texas BBQ is fairly new to Boonesboro, it has been in Lynchburg for awhile. Walter Hughes, the former owner, used to serve his smoked creations out of a great-looking trolley on Lakeside Drive and even a Chevron service station.

However, the one constant in Lynchburg is change and not too long ago Walter Hughes passed the baton to the new owner, Bill Dawson and his crew. Come in and meet them and then try their great Texas BBQ...same wonderful chow and always someone at the counter to engage in conversation. One customer summed it up nicely when asked what was good on the menu..."Everything's good here".

The restaurant itself is small, with four booths along one wall and a counter that seats ten. Take a stool at the counter and watch your marvelous BBQ creation prepared before your eyes.

It's not the ambiance that brings 'em in, it's the aroma of hickory smoke and promise of the best (and only) Texas BBQ in town.

With great "Q", timing is everything; it can't be rushed.

When asked the secret of Pok-E-Joe's fantastic barbeque, the answer from founder Hughes was something like,

"There's good smoke in the mountains...just the right amounts of seasoned oak and hickory make our sweet smoke fragrance for our meats. Long before the party begins...Pok-E-Joe's begins slowly smoking the meats at 190 to 210 degrees for 12 to 16 hours...yes, it's a long time, but the flavor makes it absolutely worth it. Our spice rubs not only season the meat, it cures it too, developing a crust around each tender slice."

It is obvious that turning out great smoked meat is an artform and every step of the process affects the taste but it all starts with the highest quality meats available.

A great selecion of sides include Ranch Style Pinto Beans, Cole Slaw, Really Good Cream Corn, Texas Hush Puppies and super Mac & Cheese. Also, let's not forget the Fresh Cut Fries and salads (as a meal or side).

Of particular note is that they also make their own barbeque sauces, rubs, seasonings, dressings and desserts.

Pok-E-Joe's goal is to offer quality food at affordable prices and they have met that goal with some to spare.
