Lynchburg is Scholastic
Educational Opportunities for Every Goal

Scholastics in higher education is an area in which Lynchburg, Virginia excels. Lynchburg is known for many things but one of the most amazing is its sheer number of choices for receiving an undergraduate or advanced degree.

Choices of where to get your degree are many and varied. Count them:

  • the world famous Liberty University
  • Lynchburg College
  • Randolph Macon Women's college now known simply as Randolph College
  • Sweet Briar College
  • Central Virginia Community College
  • Averett University in nearby Danville, VA
  • Virginia University of Lynchburg
  • Miller-Motte Technical College
  • National College
  • In addition, there is the Old Dominion University devoted to distance learning and two colleges, Bluefield College and Mary Baldwin college, located in nearby Roanoke, Va.

Since the city of Lynchburg and its four surrounding counties have a population of 233,876 as of 2009, and there was about 24,199 college students enrolled, individuals sitting in college classroom seats made up a little over 10% of the area population. These aren't just locals; students come from all over the world to pursue their educational objectives in Lynchburg.

The reason is fairly simple; quality of education, cost competitiveness, exemplary facilities, a group of professors and instructors that are tops in their respective scholastics and a warm welcoming community set in picture-postcard surroundings.

From this short introduction, you can click to a separate page for each of the fine colleges and universities that comprise the opportunities for higher education in Lynchburg.

Before going on to Lynchburg's institutions of higher learning, a few kudos about the public school system is in order.

Two high schools, E.C. Glass and Heritage High made the cut of Newsweek magazine’s list of the country's top 1350 public high schools. If that weren't good enough, both were in the top 5% of schools in the country.

Lynchburg City has 11 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 2 high schools, the Central Virginia Governor's School for Science and Technology and 6 private schools, five of which are faith based.

The surrounding four counties of Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell collectively have 31 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 7 high schools and seven private schools plus the Bedford Science and Technology Center and the Campbell County Technical Center. How's that for scholastics?

    OK, let's go to college.
