Mangia and Dish Restaurants
Thank Dave and Melanie Ellis

Mangia on Rivermont Avenue

Mangia is an Italian restaurant located in Lynchburg, VA at the corner of Rivermont and Norfolk Avenues.

Mangia Sign

Anyone who has lived in Lynchburg for a few years can be forgiven for wondering "what is it with that intersection". It seems to be the Bermuda Triange of restaurants. Wonderful eateries open up, attract a clientele and then disappear.

Going back a few years, the building housed T.C. Trotters, then Shad's, then Vines which became the Rivermont Bistro, and now a new chapter is starting with Mangia's. Rivermont Pizza is still located downstairs and hopefully will stay put and it looks like Mangia has real "staying power".

Mangia's is the creation of owners Dave and Melanie Chalmers-Ellis where Dave is the very capable chef.

As reported in The Menu, Lynchburg's Best Dining Guide, Dave Ellis has been around. He is a graduate of Johnson and Wales College of Culinary Arts, was a chef in Washington DC, Manhatten and Charleston restaurants and became a chef at Lynchburg's Bull Branch after his arrival in the burg.

Now he spends his days and nights overseeing and serving up great food at his own Dish and Mangia restaurants. His eatery is an Italian restaurant and wine bar, located at a “central neighborhood spot” as Dave describes it.

The location was the main attraction for the couple, as was the chance to open an Italian restaurant. The pizza parlor downstairs seems to have all the makings of a good symbiotic relationship.

Seating area

It is situated adjacent to Randolph college, formerly the Randolph-Macon Women's College founded in 1891 and shares the block with Magnolia Foods, a Barnes & Noble bookstore (actually the Randolph College bookstore) and several upscale boutique shops.

The lunch menu features sandwiches and salads, while dinner includes pasta entrees like carbonara (pancetta, egg, wine and peas), putanesca (olives, anchovies, capers and tomatoes) and spaghetti and meatballs, as well as new specials, announced on the chalkboard out front, every night.

Dish Small Plates and Wine Bar

Dave and Melanie also own the Dish Small Plates and Wine Bar on Main Street in downtown Lynchburg. What Dish and the trattoria have in common is that everything is made fresh every day, including breads, cheeses and desserts. Here local and organic are the words of the day.

Dish sign

Melanie says that “With both of our restaurants, we want them to be flexible, so they can be something different every time you come in.” But if you liked the famous Bloody Mary at T.C. Trotters, you will be happy to know that it has been revived at the new Italian restaurant.

Dish's lunch menu typically features such items as an herb roast beef, house made mozzarella, proscuitto, roasted red pepper and arugula, basted turkey breast and their organic burger.

Numerous small plates include such delicacies as arugula, baby lettuce, crispy polenta, potato soup, a mediterranean dish, jumbo lump crabcake, little neck clams, mussels, calamari, meatballs, organic Italian sausage, spring rolls, mexican tamales and southern fried quail.

Got a special someone to please? Then go for the "Phenomenal Rendezvous" every Monday through Thursday which includes a bottle of wine, three small plates and a slice of their homemade pie.

Click on Complete Offerings to see all the wonderful delights available at Dish.

Or if you want to see what some the Dish clients are saying, go to Dish Reviews compliments of "yelp".

Since Dish seating is limited to 32 people in its dining room, reservations are recommended.
