The Main Street Eatery - Always Delicious... Frequently Something Surprising
The Main Street Eatery's Chef and owners, Urs and wife Michelle Gabathuler, assure us that guests will enjoy a great dining experience.
The menu offers many continental as well as American choices in this elegant Main Street restaurant. Standard fare includes world class veal, exceptional beef, fresh seafood and creative duck preparations. Seasonal offerings include "game" weeks, Octoberfest and the oyster festival which are posted on their website as they occur. There is normally plenty of good curbside parking in the evenings.
Attentive, attractive servers with interesting European accents will welcome you at your table and answer every question, make recommendations and make sure everything is just to your liking. As this is being written we have just come through Virginia's soft-shell crab season. If you happen to be in Lynchburg in early spring, soft-shells at the Main Street Eatery is a must. In Chef Urs own words... "Soft-shell crab is crustacean seafood that can be eaten whole if fried or pan seared shortly after molting their hard shell. Ever since I was introduced to this Southern specialty, I can hardly wait for the annual soft shell crab season. Once again The Main Street Eatery will serve the very best Chesapeake blue crabs, lightly breaded and accompanied by a fine Remoulade sauce, served on a bed of organic mesclun greens . Enjoy them as an appetizer or make them your main course with a double helping. The soft shell crabs will be available every evening, starting June 1st, for a short period only". What else is going on at the Main Street Eatery? There are Prix Fixe dinners every evening for $19.00, including appetizer, soup or salad, entrée and dessert. Try the refreshing Mojitos made with mint from their own garden. For the uninitiated, a A mojito is a rum drink traditionally made of six ingredients: white rum, sugar (traditionally sugar cane juice), lime, sparkling water, ice, and mint. Its combination of sweetness, refreshing citrus and mint flavors is intended to complement the potent kick of the rum, and have made this delightful concoction a popular summer drink. According to customer reviews, the new favorite appetizer seems to be the Blackened oysters (mild, medium or hot) on lentil salad; works for me. The dessert cart by itself is worth the visit and will tempt every palette. Be sure to save room for dessert. One customer review refers to the proprietor as a "lovable curmudgeon". I have not seen the curmedgeon side of the proprietor, loveable or otherwise, first hand and will attest that after partaking of many meals at the Main Street Eatery, our experience with the chef, servers, barkeeps and everyone involved has been nothing but great. It is not unusual for patrons to stop by for dessert and some reviewers have commented that the proprietor does get a little impatient on busy nights with the dessert-only patrons but don't be discouraged, it's worth it. Be sure to visit the Main Street Eatery website to see the complete menu and special services. Hours: Seating 4:30 pm to 9:30 pm Monday - Saturday
