Lynchburg VA

The "Heart" of Virginia

Lynchburg VA sits at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the heart of Virginia.

Lynchburg City

John Lynch had the vision
many years ago...

Our Hill City was built along the
banks of the James River

Lynchburg is the "Hill" City; it is a river city; it is a city of history; it is a city of higher learning; it is many things but above all… it is my city.

Come with me on a tour of this vibrant, growing city and its surrounding attractions.

I will be your guide and show you my home as only an insider can. The welcome mat is out and we've left a light on for you.

The first stop for newcomers or casual visitors should be the Visitors Center located at the corner of 12th St. and Church St. just half a block up the hill from the Community Market. Look for the attractive blue sign and awnings.

Lynchburg is steeped in history, flowing through time from the first Indian settlers; to the Quakers; to the tobacco growers and bateauxmen of the river; to the slave traders and civil war defenders of the south; to the City of churches and the Falwell successes.

Numerous colleges and universities call Lynchburg home. The top names would include Liberty University, Randolph College, Lynchburg College, Sweet Briar College, Central Virginia Community College and Virginia University of Lynchburg.

In addition many smaller and specialized institutions of higher learning have chosen Lynchburg.

Lynchburg is one of the best places in the country for high quality medical care having the good fortune to play host to Centra Health and its brand spanking new cancer center.

Centra Health was just named the most "wired" hospitals and health systems in the country.

You will have to visit the rest of the website to learn what that means. Feel a heart attack coming on...come to Lynchburg VA...we mend broken hearts here.

What about technology? Would you believe Lynchburg VA is a center of the nuclear power industry in North America?

Would you believe we have some of the largest uranium deposits just a stone's throw away. Areva NP, the world leader in the design and construction of nuclear power plants and research reactors chose Lynchburg VA as a major North American site.

Babcock & Wilcox Nuclear Power Operations Group also has a nuclear production facility near Lynchburg. We're just "glowing" over these great nuclear innovators setting up shop in our town.

Lynchburg VA loves its military heritage and loves all of our country's military servicemen.

D-Day Memorial

The D-Day Memorial is the only shrine dedicated to that momentous event of June 6, 1944. If you know someone who made the ultimate sacrifice on that fateful day, you might find their name on the wall of honor.

History buffs can step back in time with visits to the Point of Honor, the Appomattox Courthouse, Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest home. Our Lynchburg City Cemetery is a must see on your tour.

Monument Terrace

While you're here, be sure to visit the inspiring Monument Terrace in the heart of our city, honoring Lynchburg citizens who fought and died in wars from the Civil War through the Vietnam conflict.

You can't beat Lynchburg VA for great scenery. The world famous Blue Ridge Parkway, an "All-American" road runs just to the west of Lynchburg, connecting Northern Virginia with Western North Carolina in one 470 mile stretch.

You will not find more breathtaking views anywhere in the country and great hiking trails abound all along the Parkway. In our own backyard are numerous great parks for hiking, biking or simply enjoying the many gifts mother nature has bestowed on our city.

The surrounding area is noted for natural beauty and scenery... check out Natural Bridge or Wintergreen or our favorite Smith Mountain Lake or any of the waterfalls in the area.

And we can't over look restaurants, theater, art galleries, music, antique shopping and so much more.

It will be my pleasure to hold the door for you and invite you in.

Take a look around and come back and see us soon!
