Grace Restaurant...
Gone but not Forgotten

In case anyone is looking for Grace Restaurant or wanting to make a return visit, be advised that it closed its doors on November 21, 2010. It is a disappointing development for the Lynchburg restaurant scene in that it was unique. Instead of removing this page, just as a matter of historical reference we will leave it up.

"Unique" was probably the best way to describe Grace Restaurant. For starters, it was located in an old "landmark" home built in 1790 and christened "Locust Thicket". At this point a short digression from the restaurant is in order to give a bit of Lynchburg history.

In 1786, Major Samuel Scott purchased 400 acres on what was then called Turkey branch at Henry Tate's corner between the lands of Benjamin Rucker and Terrill.

How's that for a property description! This was the spot where Major Scott built his home and what would eventually become Grace Restaurant. Major Scott died on June 20th, 1822 and is buried on the property where is tombstone can be viewed.

Guests were able to explore the unique attributes of the house and the property. Lynchburg visitors will miss seeing the hand-built, wood-fired bread oven and the private cemetery where major scott and several members of his family are buried.

The former Grace Restaurant

Getting back to the restaurant, Grace was open Thursday-Saturday for dinner, beginning at 5:30 pm.

Quoting from the now deleted Grace website, we read that the menu featured "specially selected, fresh local and organic whole foods without any preservatives, additives or artificial ingredients of any kind".

"All our food is prepared in our kitchen. we feature wood-fired organic breads, homemade pastas, ice creams and desserts, never made elsewhere. the atmosphere for dinner is casual and offers a broad range of price options including fixed price menus extracted from our seasonal a la carte selections".

"We hope it will be an evening for our community to connect with family and friends while sharing food that is better for our personal and global health."

Grace Restaurant was not a year-round dining experience. They typically took the summer off (their summer hiatus as they called it) and re-opened on October 1st.

By the way, the owner and chef was Kent Trebilcox who could boast over thirty years experience in the food and wine industry. He is a graduate of the Cordon Bleu Cooking School in Paris.

The reason for the summer hiatus from may through october, was because Kent was the chef and cellarmaster at the prestigious "A Bar A" guest ranch in wyoming during those months. If you were branding cattle, the "A bar A" would look like "A_A".

Earlier in his career, he was a restaurant owner in Breckenridge, Colorado and chef at Colorado governor Richard Lamm's mansion in Denver.
