Sampling the Art and Culture...
of Lynchburg, Virginia

Art and culture in Lynchburg? Yes indeed! There is no shortage of cultural arts to choose from in this beautiful town of seven hills.

Perhaps it has something to do with the numerous fine colleges and universities found in the city that serve as an incubator for all types of artists. Perhaps it also has something to do with the generous donations and patronage of the many businesses and institutions that help support the arts in Lynchburg.

Site Build It!

Funding may be tight in many larger cities for the arts and it is also tight in Lynchburg but somehow when the residents decide to renovate, rescue or resusitate an icon of the arts, the money is always forthcoming.

Two prime example are the renovation of the Academy of Fine Arts building which was a candidate for demolition not so long ago. The other is the transition of an old commerical building, near the river and catty corner from Amazement Square, into the Riverviews Artspace. The project houses a mix of artists studios, classrooms, galleries and apartments.

Numerous small boutique galleries display the work of many local artists while the Maier and Daura art museums host many world famous paintings.

The first Friday of each month are special in Lynchburg since this is when the lower Rivermont Avenue and downtown galleries plus the Lynchburg Art Club open their doors and hearts to the public for showings and receptions.

Music reigns supreme in Lynchburg complements of the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra and the Jefferson Choral Society. At the other end of the music spectrum is the Fifth Street concerts periodically bringing the old downtown area to life. Just follow your ears to the Starlight Cafe or Speakertree Records for some great listening experiences.

Broadway class plays and performances are enjoyed at the Academy of Fine Arts. More offbeat theater is offered by Wolfbane Productions or the Endstation Theater in nearby Amherst. Seasonal events such as the annual Christmas stage spectacular at Thomas Road Baptist Church showcase the incredible talent present in this small town of about 68,000 people.

Who would ever imagine that such a place would also boast an opera company, dance company, theater companies and a remarkably robust visual arts tradition. It is a very nice thing to have such a high quality art and culture community bringing balance to the impressive health care industry, educational facilities and scientific and industrial establishment of Lynchburg.
