Virginia University of Lynchburg Liberal Arts and Christian Education
Virginia University of Lynchburg has a rich heritage and is Lynchburg's oldest institution of higher education. The university has evolved through at least five name changes since it was first proposed in 1886 by the Virginia Baptist State Convention as Virginia Seminary and College. Lynchburg was selected as its site, the cornerstone was laid in 1888 for the first brick building, the charter was approved for the institution first named Lynchburg Baptist Seminary, and it opened for class on January 18th, 1890 as Virginia Seminary. The first class consisted of 33 students under the tutelage of Professor R. P. Armstead. The present name is very recent, having been changed by charter amendment in 1996. Throughout its history, VUL has had 16 presidents of which 11 were graduates of the university. Current enrollment is about 270 students with 12 faculty members. The campus occupies about 7 acres two blocks off Campbell Avenue in the southeast sector of Lynchburg City. The university of Lynchburg is organized into three schools: The G.W.
