Academically, SBC is always seen in the cream of the crop in the Princeton review's annual guidebook to the best colleges. It ranks among the highest in "best value colleges", most beautiful campus, most accessible professors, most engaged students, and career placement services. Major and minor programs run the gamut from A to Z, well A to T anyway. They begin with anthropology, followed by Biochemistry and molecular biology, Biology, Business, Chemistry and continue on through Statistics, Studio Art and Theatre. Sorry, basket weaving didn't make the list. Pre-professional programs include Pre-Law, Pre-Med, Pre-Veterinary and Teachers Education. Certificate programs are offered in Arts Management and Equine Studies. The Equine Studies Certificate allows Sweet Briar horsewomen to prepare themselves for careers in a spectrum of equine-related activities like farm and stable management, riding instruction and similar related interests. The certificate program is concentrated on management and teaching and schooling. Graduate programs are focused on education; offering the Masters of Arts in Teaching and the Master of Education in Differentiated Curriculum and Instruction.International study programs provide women the opportunity to expand their education in locales such as Scotland, Italy, France and others. Internships give students access to real hands-on working experience in order to avoid the chicken and egg trap, that is, avoiding the situation of not getting the ideal job because of having no experience in the field. In the professional scientific fields, research opportunities are set up by the college to allow qualified students to work with engineers and scientists in their respective disciplines. An added plus is that if SBC doesn't have the exact major a student desires, it is possible to customize your own major under the guidance of the professorial staff. Sweet Briar College owes its existence to Ms. Indiana Fletcher Williams who designated her entire estate to the founding of an educational institution in memory of her only daughter, Daisy, who died at the age of 16 in 1884. The estate was substantial, actually huge, consisting of over a million dollars and 8000 acres of land upon which the college now sits. The first board of directors determined that the college would be free from denominational control and maintain the highest academic standards. It opened in September 1906 with 51 students.
