Driving Around Lynchburg

Find Your Niche

The Lynchburg transportation roadway system for newcomers or anyone just passing through, can be confusing at best.

For example, entering the Lynchburg area on 501 from the Blue Ridge Parkway, we come to a traffic light where 501 splits; 501 business to the left and 501 to the right.

Selecting 501 business, we soon find we are on Boonsboro Road which changes to Rivermont Avenue at Link Road. After a short distance 501 business takes a right turn where it’s now called Rivermont Terrace and within a few yards all of sudden its Langhorne Road.

Continuing on 501 business/Langhorne Road, we soon find another identity crisis when it becomes Campbell Avenue which soon crosses 460/29 and is once again plain old 501 heading southeast to Red Hill, and Lynchburg is in the rearview mirror.

Back at that traffic light at the 501 split, if we took the right turn and stayed on 501 heading south, we would discover that after crossing under Timberlake Road (or Fort Avenue if you are looking to the right), 501 starts a slow, wide curve back to the north.

Lo and behold, we are now on 29 business heading north across the James River and on to Charlottesville. That is unless we took a right turn at Candlers Mountain Road at the mall, staying on 501 which merges with 460/29 to Appomattox but splits off in a few miles to rejoin 501 business to Red Hill.

The situation is much the same if driving on 460 business which might be Timberlake Road or just might be Fort Avenue. Then there is 29 and 29 business which might be Ward's Road or might be 460 if you took a wrong turn at the highway interchange.

Let's not forget 221 which might be Lakeside Drive or Forest Road.

Such is life driving in and around the Lynchburg transportation network. But not to worry, in about six months it all becomes second nature.

Meanwhile get a good map or GPS but take the GPS directions with a big grain of salt.

Motoring Options

Limousine Services

If one has loads of money and doesn't want to drive, there is always the chauffeured limousine option. Lynchburg is blessed with several to choose from and having never been part of the limousine crowd, no attempt at a recommendation will be given here.

Two of the better known limo services comprising Lynchburg's transportation options are:

K and J Limousine Service, Inc., which claims to provide the "very finest in luxury limousine service throughout Central Virginia, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year." They have a "fleet of luxury sedans, limousines as well as passenger vans". Their website is set up to make online reservations or they can be reached by phone at 1-866-557-3326 or (434) 385-671.

Premier Limousine Service, Home of the Hummer, in another well known Lynchburg limousine provider located at 3727 Old Forest Road. Premier also has a comprehensive website with nice photos of the "fleet" and Premier's owners, the Harrington's, as well as their drivers in the "about us" navbar tab. Be sure to take a look at their Premier Room for those extra special party occasions. A convenient form is included on the website for making online reservations or they can be reached at (434) 385-8400.

Taxi Services

There are 12 cab companies serving the Lynchburg transportation capabilities that are listed in the online yellow pages so there should be no shortage of quick response cabs when the need arises.

Their listings can be found via the online link to the aforementioned yellow pages for your convenience.

Car Rentals

Every major car rental company is present in Lynchburg at the Regional Airport as well as others such as Enterprise being located at various locations around the city.

This may be a good place to insert a link to a great Lynchburg overview from City-data.com. It appears to be designed more for realtors in that it has loads of statistical data charts, maps, photos and a lot of "hard to find" information about the city.

From here we will move on to the air travel facet of Lynchburg transportation via the Lynchburg Regional Airport.
