GLTC and Greyhound Get on the Bus, Gus!
Lynchburg's GLTC bus service is clean, modern, efficient and inexpensive. What more could anyone want? The acronym stands for the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company, the organization that provides bus service throughout the area. The Greater Lynchburg Transit Company was established in 1974 as a non-profit, publicly-owned company. In this case, publicly owned means that the City of Lynchburg is the only stockholder; no, you can't buy the bus company's stock on the exchange. It is run by a nine-member Board of Directors, serving as volunteers and appointed by City Council. The board establishes company policies and selects a management company to control day-to-day operations. The board must know someone in high places since in November 2009; the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company landed a nice slice of a statewide $41.3 million economic stimulus pie for buses, vans, equipment and other transit improvements courtesy of the U.S. Department of Transportation. The actual award was a $5.2 million grant which was used to buy seven new buses plus needed equipment and passenger amenities. For a good overview of the Lynchburg public bus system, visit the GLTC website and take a look at the route map to see how much of the Lynchburg area it covers.
