CVCC, Central Virginia Community College

CVCC isn't as old as most of the learning institutions in Lynchburg. Being conceived in 1965-66 by legislative act of the Virginia General Assembly, the planning and support that went into its development resulted in a first rate college that has benefited Central Virginia in so many ways.

Step 1 was for a local committee to investigate the need and feasibility for a community college for the Central Virginia region.

Step 2 was accomplished when the State Board for Community Colleges examined the local committee’s findings and concurred that a central Virginia location was needed for a two-year college to serve Lynchburg and its surrounding counties.

Step 3 was the site selection and after examining 20 potential sites, the current location was recommended and approved by state and local boards.

Step 4 was the organizing, staffing and construction phase which went on until the dedication ceremony was held on November 1, 1968.

Step 5 was accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools on December 3, 1969.

Since 1969 to the present, CVCC has expanded from two buildings to six modern buildings on 104 acres, four off campus sites in nearby Alta Vista, Amherst, Appomattox and Bedford and boasts an enrollment of over 5,300 students.

The college course offerings are divided into three academic divisions under which all credit courses fall. They are:

  • Business and Allied Health (Amherst Hall)
  • Humanities and Social Sciences (Merritt Hall)
  • Science, Math and Engineering (Campbell Hall)
  • The Appomattox Building is administrative including the president’s office and human resources.

The Bedford LRC building houses the campus library and various labs and classrooms.

Amherst Hall houses the student center, book store and classrooms.

Merritt Hall and Campbell Hall both house numerous classrooms and labs (Merritt Hall.

    Areva Technical Center at CVCC

The AREVA Technology Center is devoted to industrial vocations such as machining, heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC), electronics and construction.

The Center is here because of the large number of machine tool firms in the area but mostly because AREVA needs a reliable source of highly trained machine tool operators. It's a win-win proposition for all concerned.

Central Virginia Community College academics, admissions, resources and more can be viewed on their website.

A second recommended website for CVCC cost information and degree programs is universities.com.
